Many thanks to Igor Frost and the whole Psychomania Fanzine crew. Thanks also to billy for scanning!
Mark "Mad Dog" Cole – Mental all the time!
Psychomania Fanzine: Hi Mad Dog, you´ve been interviewed for the “Psychomania”-Fanzines sometimes before. 2007 has seen your comeback with a new band, your tour and your new album “Ultra Violence”. Has 2007 been a success for you?
2007 has been a greater success than I could have possibly imagined. Who’d have thought that from the initial contact back in October 2006, that we would have played the biggest festivals in Europe, produced a new album, toured Germany and appeared in/on pretty much every fanzine and website!
Psychomania Fanzine: How did the Psychobilly scene react to your new album?
The scene is always going to gauge anything I do against my past efforts. On the whole, it has received a 99% positive reaction. If I thought it would have been accepted without question, there wasn’t a lot of point in attempting anything new. The emphasis still seems to be on my “voice”, and mainly, the reaction is that it hasn’t changed.
Psychomania Fanzine: Are there plans for a following album? What would you like to change compared to “Ultra Violence”?
YES, there are plans to continue recording now that I’m back. I will NOT make everyone wait 10 years with false promises on a “New album”! As for any changes, I will include more original tracks on the next album, and less covers. I thought that 20+ years away from the music that I would not have a direction anymore, but I now know that to be untrue. Both Jim and myself have many ideas for the future, and we are constantly working on new material.
Psychomania Fanzine: Will you be on tour again 2008?
We are in negotiations with various promoters via our agent, with regards to the USA & Japan etc. We hope to be announcing something major in the next few months. We are always open to offers from everywhere, so get your requests in now!
Psychomania Fanzine: In an interview you´ve said, that the Psychobilly scene from 1984 differs from the nowadays scene. What are the differences for you? Are the differences in your opinion between the various local or national scenes?
When I said the scene differs, I was thinking of how it was for me back in the 80s’. It was massive in the UK back then, and yes I know things come and go, but there are only a couple of promoters in the UK still keeping this alive, and more power to them.
When we used to play The Klubfoot etc, everything was mental. That place was a shit-hole, but it was THE place to be back then. There is just nowhere like it in the UK nowadays.
Psychomania Fanzine: What do you think, how will Psychobilly develop in the future?
If I had the answer to that, I would keep it to myself and progress in the direction! So long as there are new bands constantly entering the scene, there will always be Psychobilly. I love the sound of what it is that we do. It fires my imagination, and allows me to experiment with different angles. Progress or die. It is the way of the world.
Psychomania Fanzine: What are your plans for 2008?
I want to record another album, visit as many countries as possible, and play as often as is wanted. The US and Japan are very important to the bands’ future plans, so as soon as these details are in place, the sooner we can expect bigger things from MadDogCole.
